Minister pays tribute to archaeologist

"On behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends on the death of Dr. Ralph Pastore," said Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "Dr. Pastore was an exceptional scholar, in both the archaeological and ethnological fields, and will be missed by his colleagues at Memorial University and in the Provincial Archaeology Unit of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.

Minister Aylward continued: "He will be remembered for his work involving the aboriginal peoples of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador, particularly through his excavation and interpretation of the Beothuck site at Boyds Cove. His contribution to our body of knowledge is significant. Countless students and professional historians and archaeologists will continue to benefit from his work. Additionally, his research and studies support the storyline for The Rooms exhibits relating to aboriginal people that are currently being developed.

"Dr. Pastore will be remembered not only for the more than three decades of his scholarly work and involvement with our heritage and history, but also for his unique sense of humour which brightened the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Ralph Pastore will not be forgotten by the people of this province. We will remember him with great regard, fondness and respect."
