Child and Youth Advocate office to open

Lloyd L. Wicks, Child and Youth Advocate for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador announced today that his office will commence operation effective Monday, November 18.

The legislation establishing the Child and Youth Advocate received Royal Assent in the House of Assembly on December 13, 2001. Mr. Wicks actually was officially sworn in on September 16, 2002 and since that time has been engaged in acquiring offices and staff.

The advocate will focus on public programs and services that have an impact on children and youth under 19 and will also review enquiries and complaints concerning individual children and youth, up until the age of 19, and from youth who are in care or custody until the age of 21.

Mr. Wicks stated he hopes that those who have concerns with respect to the well being of any child or youth will, in future, avail of the opportunity to get in touch with his office. He further noted: "The hallmark of this office will always be the best interest of the child or youth."
