Precautions necessary when using propane appliances

Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs Oliver Langdon and Fire Commissioner Fred Hollett encourage citizens to take the necessary precautions when using propane appliances.

Minister Langdon, expressed his concern over this issue. "Over the past couple of years, this province has witnessed the unnecessary death and serious injury to citizens who used propane appliances without following the manufacturers specifications for proper installation and maintenance."

Appliances should be properly installed according to the manufacturers specifications and checked frequently, or inspected by qualified personnel if not having been in use for some time. "With cabin season around the corner, many people are taking out camping stoves, lanterns and other propane appliances that havent been used for many months. Many barbeques and propane tanks have been left outside or in sheds during the winter months. All propane appliances, tanks and fixtures should be inspected before use. Please make safety a priority by having your propane appliances and tanks serviced," said Minister Langdon.

Fire Commissioner Fred Hollett warns citizens that the appliance flues or burner assemblies may not function properly due to soot accumulation or dislodging due to movement. Such conditions may pose a threat to health and even life if the appliance produces carbon monoxide, which can be fatal when there is limited ventilation.

The Fire Commissioner advises that "safety should always be the highest priority. With the installation of a carbon monoxide detector in your home or cabin, and by following the manufacturers guidelines, serious injury can be avoided."

For further information concerning the proper use and maintenance of propane appliances, citizens are encouraged to contact their local fire department.
