$29.268 million offered to City of St. Johns for Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement

Joan Marie Aylward, MHA - St. Johns Centre, Lloyd Matthews MHA - St. Johns North, and Walter Noel, MHA - Virginia Waters, on behalf of Oliver Langdon, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, announced today an offer of $29.268 million to the City of St. Johns for a Multi-Year Municipal Capital Works Agreement.

"The infusion of this capital works funding into the St. Johns economy could create numerous employment opportunities in the construction industry, and generate a large number of indirect or spin off jobs in the trades and supply industry," said Minister Aylward. "It will allow the taxpayers of St. Johns to enhance the city infrastructure for 50 cent dollars."

"This offer provides the City of St. John's with an excellent opportunity to complete much needed upgrades to infrastructure throughout the city. This is the second time government has provided the city with an opportunity to participate in a Multi-Year Municipal Capital Works Agreement bringing the total provincial commitment to approximately $60 million," said Minister Matthews. "Participation in the program will enable the city to plan its capital works program for the upcoming years and optimize the construction season."

Minister Noel said: "I am hopeful that a portion of this $29.268 million will be used to upgrade aging storm sewer infrastructure in the district of Virginia Waters. This would mean that residents would no longer have to experience the severity of flood damage caused by Tropical Storm Gabrielle."

Discussions with municipalities and the finalization of priority lists will be completed within weeks. Details of individual projects that will be completed under this specific agreement will be announced during the official signing between the municipality and the province.

The provincial government has committed more than $100 million over three years for the Multi-Year Municipal Capital Works Program which will be cost-shared on a 50/50 basis with larger municipalities.

This Multi-Year Municipal Capital Works Program is the first of three infrastructure and capital works programs that have been committed to for the next three years for a total of $261 million. Projects for this years Municipal Capital Works Program, which is cost-shared between the provincial and municipal governments, are expected to be announced in a few weeks. Projects approved under the Canada-Newfoundland Infrastructure Program, which is cost-shared between the provincial, federal and municipal governments, will be announced in accordance with the federal-provincial agreement.
