Ministers announce process to strengthen Offshore Occupational Health and Safety

Mines and Energy Minister Lloyd Matthews and Labour Minister Anna Thistle today announced governments intention to amend the provinces Atlantic Accord Implementation Acts to strengthen the offshore occupational health and safety regime.

Newfoundland and Labrador, in partnership with the Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia, will commence a consultation process on the proposed amendments. This process will involve consultation meetings with various stakeholders including industry, labour and government. In addition, a public website has been established that will identify the proposed amendments, enable the sharing of information and provide a vehicle for the public to make submissions to government.

"All parties involved in offshore exploration and production have a responsibility in ensuring that our offshore health and safety environment is second to none," said Minister Matthews. "These amendments will build upon and strengthen our current regulatory framework, and government will ensure that this provinces regime grows with the development of our offshore industry."

"The health and safety of our offshore workers is of paramount importance," said Minister Thistle. "The proposed amendments will ensure that workers in our offshore area are working under one of the most stringent, protective and modern offshore health and safety regimes in the world."
