Bull Arm Site Corporation provides update on activities occurring at Bull Arm Site

Brian Maynard, acting president and CEO of the Bull Arm Site Corporation (BASC), today provided an update on recent activities occurring at the Bull Arm Site.

The Bull Arm Site Corporation administers the Bull Arm fabrication site assets, manages the day to day activities of the site and markets the site to potential users.

Mr. Maynard said that the BASC is continuing their efforts to attract new users to the fabrication facility. "The BASC participates in a number of conferences and trade shows annually," said Mr. Maynard. "As a result of these promotional activities, Bull Arm has become well known and continues to receive expressions of interest from a variety of companies wishing to undertake work at this site.

"Each proposal that the BASC receives must be examined to ensure that any potential project is feasible and provides sufficient benefits to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Mr. Maynard. "We are currently in various stages of discussion and assessment with several potential proponents, however, until we are completely satisfied that the feasibility of each potential opportunity has been proven and that local work and benefits commitments are maximized at the site, the BASC will not commit to any one project."

Mr. Maynard also explained that the storage of tires at the Bull Arm Site is only a temporary measure prior to the re-establishment of the provinces tire recycling program. "The Bull Arm Site was selected by the Department of Environment and the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board as a potential site because it offered a safe and secure location for tire storage," said Mr. Maynard. "The site is under 24 hour surveillance and well removed from housing areas. From a public safety perspective, we believed the temporary storage of tires in an unoccupied and segregated area of the site made good sense. This is an area of the site that is away from the main locations that were used for the Hibernia and Terra Nova projects and would not impact on any project that would potentially commence fabrication activities in the future."

Mr. Maynard also noted that the Department of Environment has assured the BASC that this is only a very temporary measure and the guidelines for the safe storage of tires in the province will be strictly enforced at the Bull Arm Site.

Mr. Maynard emphasized that the BASC continues to work hard to attract fabrication related activity to the site and is currently targeting work from Voiseys Bay, White Rose, Sable Tier II and Deep Panuke.

The BASC is confident that the Bull Arm Site will be utilized again in the near future.
