Contracts awarded for water and sewer,
equipment for northern Labrador

Torngat Mountains MHA Wally Andersen and Labrador MP Lawrence O�Brien are pleased to announce that nine contracts, valued at nearly $4.1 million, have been awarded for water and sewer projects and the supply of equipment in northern Labrador.

A total of $1,295,529.05 has been awarded to Newfound Construction Limited of St. John�s for Phase 10 of the water and sewer project in Hopedale, and $471,824.07 for water and sewer and miscellaneous work in Makkovik. Budgell�s Equipment and Rentals Limited of Triton has been awarded $690,703 for Phase 4 of the water and sewer system for new residential subdivision in Postville, as well as a $614,685.90 contract for Phase 7 of a water and sewer project in Rigolet. Crown Paving of Mount Pearl received a $494,220.73 contract to carry out water and sewer improvements and miscellaneous work in Nain.

With respect to the supply of equipment, Harvey and Company Limited of St. John�s was awarded $87,019.95 for the supply of a new dump truck, and Labrador Conversions of Happy Valley-Goose Bay was awarded $174,200 for the supply of an all-terrain emergency response fire truck for Nain. Saunders Equipment Limited of Fredericton, New Brunswick, was awarded $264,946.43 for the supply of a new snowmobile trail groomer for Makkovik.

The projects were approved under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Contribution Agreement for the Benefit of the Inuit Communities of Labrador.

"The water and sewer initiatives will play a major role in improving the quality of life for many residents in my district," said Mr. Andersen. "The new equipment for Nain and Makkovik will also help to enhance public services."

"These projects confirm our commitment to coastal Labrador," said Mr. O'Brien. "They will enhance the quality of life for residents in these communities and significantly impact future development."

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Contribution Agreement for the Benefit of the Inuit Communities of Labrador is a long-standing agreement which provides cost-shared funding for community water and sewer and housing infrastructure in the five northern Labrador Inuit communities. The management committee for the agreement includes representatives of the five Inuit communities and the Labrador Inuit Association, and is co-chaired by Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador.
