Silviculture funding announced for Terra Nova

Tom Lush, MHA for Terra Nova, has announced funding in the amount of $81,481 for a silviculture project taking place in his district. The announcement was made in conjunction with Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford. The funding is being provided through the Provincial Silviculture Program.

"I have always been a supporter of forestry activity in the area and a strong advocate of silviculture activity in particular," said Minister Lush. "I am pleased to see, with todays announcement, that government is continuing its effort toward responsible forest management in the Terra Nova District."

Minister Woodford said silviculture is an integral component of governments responsible approach toward sustainable forest management. "Silviculture initiatives such as this reforestation project taking place in Terra Nova will help maintain a healthy forest ecosystem, as well as ensuring a sustainable wood supply for the future."

The project will see the planting of over 810,000 tree seedlings from the provincial tree nursery at Wooddale on burned and previously scarified sites. Planting will take place at various sites throughout the district.

TerCan Holdings Inc. of Campbellton was awarded the contract for the project, which will provide employment for up to 20 people for approximately seven weeks. The project is scheduled to commence July 18.
