Silviculture work announced for District of Terra Nova

Terra Nova MHA Tom Lush, has announced funding in the amount of $44,700 for a silviculture initiative taking place in his district. The announcement was made in conjunction with Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford. The funding is being provided through the Provincial Silviculture Program.

"The forestry sector plays an important role in the economic success of Terra Nova," said Minister Lush. "Todays announcement not only provides employment to people for the area, but does so in an ecologically responsible manner that ensures the forest resources will be replenished and maintained for future use."

Minister Woodford said responsible management of our forest resource through meaningful silviculture activity will ensure the forests of our province remain productive into the future. "Silviculture initiatives such as this demonstrate governments commitment to sustainable forest management. In addition, such work provide a significant boost to local economies particularly those in rural communities."

This project will provide employment for 12 individuals and involve planting 207 hectares with a mixture of approximately 570,000 black spruce, white pine and red pine from the Provincial Tree Nursery at Wooddale. Activity will take place in the Eight Mile Bridge area. The contract for the project was awarded to Samson Holdings. The project commenced May 27 and will last until July 5.
