Province reaches agreement with
Labrador Mtis Nation on forestry development

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has agreed to facilitate the participation of the Labrador Mtis Nation in Labradors forest management process. This has been accomplished through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Province and the LMN.

"Government is committed to continue working with the Labrador Mtis Nation to further develop the forest industry in Labrador for the benefit of the Mtis people and the communities in which they live," said Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ernie McLean. "The LMN has provided valuable input in the past, and we look forward to their continued involvement and cooperation."

Minister McLean also acknowledged the support of his Parliamentary Secretary, Torngat Mountains MHA Wally Andersen. "Mr. Andersen played an instrumental role in helping to move this file forward, and should be commended for his active involvement."

Under the MOU the Province will provide $120,000 to the LMN, which will allow them to provide meaningful input and advice to government on the forest planning process in the region.

The Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Rick Woodford, said government is committed to ensuring the forest industry in Labrador is developed first and foremost for the benefit of the region. "This agreement will enable the LMN to provide input into Labradors forest ecosystem management, and help ensure continued sustainable and prudent development of the forest resource in the region," said the minister.
