Department contributes $3,500 to indoor air quality campaign

The Department of Labour has made a $3,500 contribution to the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Associations indoor air quality campaign. The department has contributed approximately $30,000 to this cause since 1996, when the Lung Association began a vigorous campaign to develop air quality awareness in the province.

"Government recognizes the importance of this annual campaign and we are pleased to partner again this year," said Minister Anna Thistle. "I encourage families, organizations, workplaces and individuals, to commit to improving the air we breathe, both inside and outside."

Approximately 20 per cent of the provinces population, translating into more than 100,000 people, have a breathing problem. Most of these people are bothered by scented products.

"Ninety-four per cent of those surveyed by the Lung Association said they would change their behavior and use fewer irritating products once made aware of how their habits affected their co-workers," said Sandra Chaytor, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association. "All feedback indicates that our scent-free program is working - but our greatest challenge is getting the message out."
