Marked improvement in labour stability

Labour Minister Anna Thistle is pleased to announce that first quarter statistics for 2002 clearly demonstrate a positive shift toward a more stable labour relations climate in the province.

"During the first quarter there has been a marked improvement in labour stability, with the lowest number of person-days lost due to work stoppages, in five years," stated Thistle.

The minister pointed out that with the assistance of the Department of Labour, 15 collective agreements covering nearly 8,000 employees have been reached during this period. "As well, my department was able to provide facilitation assistance to the FFAW and FANL, which resulted in the successful negotiation of another 11 fish species collective agreements in the fishing industry, covering several thousand fish harvesters."

"The ongoing efforts and commitment of business, labour and government to co-operate and collaborate in the workplace is proving to be very positive," stated Thistle. "This new direction, along with recent labour standards legislative amendments, clearly demonstrate a consensus among all stakeholders, of the importance of a stable labour climate in positioning the province both globally and domestically, to take advantage of business initiatives that will create more employment opportunities for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."

The Department of Labour facilitates the collective bargaining of approximately 500 private and public sector agreements, involving 75,000 workers in this province.
