Funding to enhance enforcement of Occupational Health and Safety Act

Labour Minister Anna Thistle announced today that $1.3 million has been allocated in the 2002-2003 Budget for 13 full-time and two half-time positions and associated operating expenditures relating to the reorganization and expansion of the Occupational Health and Safety Division.

"The Department of Labour is committed to its mandate of improving health and safety in the workplace," said Minister Thistle. "The allocation of $1.3 million for additional staff in the Occupational Health and Safety Division will significantly enhance the enforcement and inspection activities of the division."

Expanding its staffing complement and realigning its organizational structure is another effort of the Department of Labour to implement recommendations of the Task Force on the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission. Specifically, the task force recommended that the Department of Labour increase substantially its compliance monitoring and enforcement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, that the number of inspectors be increased significantly and be aligned by industry/sector and trained accordingly.

Minister Thistle added: "This new funding demonstrates governments overall commitment to ensuring safe, healthy workplaces throughout the province. The recruitment process for these positions is ongoing."
