NLIS 6 February 4, 2002 (Labour) Snow removal advisory The Occupational Health and Safety Division of the Department of Labour today issued a reminder to employers, workers and the general public to keep safety in mind when removing snow and ice from roofs, walkways, driveways and parking lots. It is also important to ensure entrances and exits are kept free of snow to allow free access, especially in case of an emergency. Occupational Health and Safety legislation requires employers to ensure that workers are protected from falling when removing snow or ice from roofs. This may be accomplished through the use of fall protection systems which may include fall arrest and travel restraint systems, guardrails and barricades, or other effective measures. Appropriate fall protection is required for work on all types of roofs, including flat roof structures. For further information on safe practices for removing snow from roofs, or when using snow plows, snow blowers or when shovelling, please visit the Department of Labours Web site at www.gov.nl.ca/labour/whats_new.asp The Occupational Health and Safety Inspections Division conducts regular inspections of workplaces throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
