Appointments to Legal Aid Commission

Justice Minister and Attorney General Kelvin Parsons is pleased to announce the re-appointments of Shelley Senior, Madelyn Kelly and Don Stuckless, the appointment of Nick Avis as chairperson and the appointment of Gerard Griffin as members of the province�s Legal Aid Commission. The appointments are for a two-year term.

The Newfoundland Legal Aid Commission is responsible for the administration of the Legal Aid plan.

Nick Avis attended Memorial University graduating in 1976 with a bachelor of science in physics. He graduated from Queen�s University, Ontario in 1980 with an LL.B. He articled with the Newfoundland Legal Aid Commission for two years, and became staff solicitor/area director for the Newfoundland Legal Aid Commission for a brief period in St. John�s before moving on to Corner Brook. He is currently an associate with Brown Fitzgerald Morgan & Avis Law Firm in St. John�s. He was admitted to the Bar in December 1980 and was appointed to Queen�s Counsel in June 2000.

Gerard Griffin attended Memorial University and obtained a forestry diploma in 1963. He graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1973 with a bachelor of science in forestry and graduated from the same university with a masters in forestry in 1979. He graduated from the University of Windsor, Ontario, with his law degree in 1982 and was called to the Newfoundland Bar in 1982. He was appointed to Queen�s Counsel in August 2001.
