Justice Minister announces Interjurisdictional Support Orders legislation

Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons today announced government is moving forward to put in place the Interjurisdictional Support Orders Act. The act was introduced during this current session of the House of Assembly and debate on the legislation has begun.

"Government is committed to improving the process for families obtaining support orders," said Minister Parsons. "This legislation recognizes the challenges presented by an increasingly mobile population by allowing for greater coordination among the provinces and territories."

The Interjurisdictional Support Orders Act will streamline procedures by reducing the court hearings required to obtain or change a support order where one party is outside of Newfoundland and Labrador.

"This new process will reduce the court hearings from two to one. It will be speedier, easier and more efficient," said Minister Parsons. "It will ensure that support is obtained more quickly for children and families who need it."

Nearly half of enforceable files in Newfoundland and Labrador are in other jurisdictions.

The act is expected to come into effect early in the new year.
