Appointments to Human Rights Commission

Justice Minister and Attorney General Kelvin Parsons is pleased to announce the appointment of three new members to the Province�s Human Rights Commission. The appointments are for a five-year term.

The Commission�s mandate is to enforce the Human Rights Code, which prohibits discrimination and harassment, and to promote equality and opportunity. The legislation applies to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and agencies and private businesses that are under provincial jurisdiction.

Winston Green is the owner/operator of a funeral home in Grand Falls-Windsor. He was a member of Windsor Town Council for five years. In his capacity as Town Councillor he was chairman of the town�s Finance Committee. He also chaired the Embalmers and Funeral Directors Board, was past-president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Funeral Services Association and chaired the Education Committee for the Newfoundland and Labrador School of Mortuary Science.

Shirley Barr is the Coordinator of Mokami Status of Women Council. She has chaired a number organizations: GAPS Group, an organization which attempts to meet emergency material needs of people; the Libra House Shelter for Battered Women; and the Labradorians for Peaceful Communities. She served on a Local Spiritual Assembly of the Baha�i Community for 12 of the past 15 years and served as Assistant to the Auxiliary Board for Protection for almost 12 years.

Gilbert Thomas is retired as the principal of St. Andrew�s Elementary School in St. John�s. He is a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland with a B.A. (Ed) and has a graduate diploma in Educational Psychology (Guidance and Counseling).
