Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons today acknowledges Deputy Chief G.F. Browne on his prestigious award.

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, has appointed Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Deputy Chief Gary Browne as a Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces.

"It is a proud day when an officer of Deputy Chief Brownes caliber is recognized with an award. His exceptional merit and contributions to policing and the community are a testimony to the exceptional standard of performance of police officers in the province," said the minister.

Deputy Chief Browne is the only officer in the province to be honoured with this appointment. He is one of 14 members who have been appointed as members for their exceptional service or performance of duty within their jurisdiction.

Deputy Chief Browne will be presented with his insignia of membership at an investiture ceremony being held today at 11:00 a.m. at Rideau Hall.

"I extend my warmest congratulations to Deputy Chief Browne on his appointment to the order. It is quite an honour for one of our own officers to be recognized in this way," said Minister Parsons.
