Mobile stage manufacturer in Shearstown gains double EDGE status

A Conception Bay North company that plans to establish a manufacturing facility in Shearstown has received double EDGE status from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Can-Am Stageline is an export-oriented, rural-based company that is creating jobs and helping to diversify the economy of rural Newfoundland and Labrador. It is an example of how government initiatives such as EDGE can help stimulate new economic activity and job creation in a rural community," said Kelvin Parsons, Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development.

Can-Am Stageline Incorporated designs and manufactures mobile stages for use in outdoor theatrical and musical events. Its 24 by 32 foot mobile stage includes a dressing room, bathroom and sound monitoring room, yet folds down so that it can by towed behind a transport truck. The mobile stage was designed by Can-Am Stageline president Tom Noseworthy of Shearstown who previously designed and pre-fabricated classrooms and remote work camps. The companys goal is to produce mobile stages with shorter setup and breakdown times at lower costs than traditional units. Its target sales area is the United States marketplace. Can-Am Stageline plans to have 15 - 25 people employed in 2003.

"This company is an example of the good things that are happening in Newfoundland and Labrador, especially in the small business sector. I applaud Mr. Noseworthy for his initiative in developing this new business venture in Conception Bay North," said Minister Parsons.

The EDGE program was recently enhanced to provide additional incentives to companies that establish or expand in rural areas. It includes a new 50 per cent rebate on federal corporate income tax along with an existing 100 per cent rebate on provincial corporate income tax and municipal taxes. Double EDGE also increases the tax holiday period for companies establishing or expanding outside the Northeast Avalon region to 15 years from 10 years, fulfilling a commitment government made in its Renewal Strategy for Jobs and Growth to enhance EDGE benefits for rural areas as a means of stimulating the rural economy.
