Team Canada Atlantic returning to New York

Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), announced today that he and the four Atlantic provincial ministers responsible for trade will lead a delegation of companies on its second Team Canada Atlantic trade mission to New York City on November 5 - 7.

Building on the success of last May's Team Canada Atlantic mission, Minister Byrne will be joined by the four provincial ministers responsible for trade: Cecil P. Clarke, Nova Scotia Minister of the Office of Economic Development; Norman Betts, Minister of Business New Brunswick; Kelvin Parsons, Newfoundland and Labrador Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development; and Michael F. Currie, Prince Edward Island Minister of Development and Technology.

"Valuable partnerships were established during our first mission to New York City, and we're excited at the prospect of developing more," said Minister Byrne. "Weve learned that follow-up and persistence are key to obtaining market access. Initial visits may open the door, but return trips help continue dialogue and increase the chances of success."

"The Newfoundland and Labrador companies that participated in the May 2002 mission to New York City have realized significant benefits from our initial visit," said Minister Parsons. "We are pleased to support the efforts of our companies in the province through this follow-up mission and are confident we will see continued success in this key market."

Participating Newfoundland and Labrador companies include: Newfoundland Aggregates (St. Georges), Galen Gypsum (St. Georges), Fortrex Manufacturing Ltd. (Corner Brook), thedog8it! (St. Johns), Infotech Canada (St. Johns), Murray Enterprises (St. Johns), Network Newfoundland and Labrador (St. Johns), Rodrigues Winery (Markland) and Red Ochre Productions (St. John's).

If the last trade mission is any indication, the Atlantic Canadian companies on this trip have a high chance for success. Surveys conducted after the May mission show that long-term sales, over the next two years, are estimated at just over $40 million, of which $23 million is expected to be realized by Newfoundland and Labrador based companies. It is projected that an additional 140 new jobs will be generated across Atlantic Canada over the same period from these sales contracts, of which 33 are expected to be generated in this province.

"The first trade mission to New York allowed many businesses in the Tri-State area to learn more about our region and what our companies can do," added Minister Byrne. "I'm confident we can build on the success of that trip. The partnerships formed during the two trade missions will create a solid foundation to develop trade and investment opportunities for many years to come."

The goals of the fall trade mission to New York are to reinforce connections made on the initial mission, to create new business partnerships, to increase trade and investment, and to build strategic alliances between Atlantic Canadian companies and the New York business market.

New York is the uncontested international business and financial centre of the United States. With a population equivalent to Canada's and an economy nearly 50% greater in value than Canadas total output, the greater New York area is an obvious market for Atlantic Canada's exporting industries.

Team Canada Atlantic's trade mission to New York is being organized by ACOA, the four Atlantic provinces, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Industry Canada and Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters.
