Funding announced to assist start up of print-making studio in rural Newfoundland

Kelvin Parsons, Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, announced that his department is contributing $18,000 to assist with the start up of Nortons Cove Studio, a print-making facility in Bonavista Bay.

The facility will be the first non-toxic print shop in the province. (A traditional print shop uses chemicals that, over a period of time, can pose health problems to studio users. Norton's Cove Studio will not use any toxic chemicals.) Funding was made available through the department's Small Business Seed Capital Equity Program. Under the program, matching funds must be provided by the company receiving the assistance.

"The print-making facility will provide the arts community with access to a new facility in rural Newfoundland and will also help the Bonavista Bay area by creating new job opportunities and diversifying the local economy," said Minister Parsons.

The funding will assist with the establishment of the studio and purchase of print-making equipment and art stock.

Janet Davis, owner of Nortons Cove Studio, said: "Without the assistance of the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, this project could not have become a reality. This print shop and studio will make a dramatic difference to the lives of the people it employs and serves in the community, as well as making a significant impact on the island's arts community. I am extremely grateful to all those at the department for their help and guidance in bringing Norton's Cove Studio to reality."

Nortons Cove Studio plans to celebrate its grand opening during the week of September 16-22, 2002. Special events will include print-making demonstrations by appointment and an official opening reception.

The Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development established a new $2 million Small Business Seed Capital Equity Program on April 1, 2000, in direct response to the Jobs and Growth consultations. This program makes equity of up to $50,000 available on a matching basis to new entrepreneurs or existing small businesses seeking expansion opportunities in areas of the economy that offer significant growth potential.
