Rodrigues winery showcases wines at exclusive event in New York City

Rodrigues Winery of Markland showcased its unique products at an event last evening in New York City to about two dozen food brokers and distributors in the foodservice and grocery retail industry.

The exclusive showcase was followed by the Taste of Atlantic Canada reception that was attended by some 300 business officials from the area as part of Team Canada Atlantics first trade mission to New York City.

"This event complements our other trade mission initiatives such as personal calls on key retailers and in-store wine tastings," said Larry Stephan, marketing director for Rodrigues Winery. "We are very pleased with the response we are receiving and hope to establish a greater retail presence in the greater New York marketplace as a result of this trade mission."

The Taste of Atlantic Canada Reception and Food Promotion, organized by Agriculture Canada and co-sponsored by Team Canada Atlantic and the Consulate General of Canada in New York, provides Team Canada Atlantic food industry participants an opportunity to promote their products to U.S. business representatives, industry associations and government officials.

The reception was hosted by the Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), Gerry Byrne, and the Consul General in New York, Michael Phillips.

"This was a great opportunity to showcase the quality of food preparation and high quality of food products inherent to Atlantic Canada," said Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). "Atlantic Canadians are always proud to share the food and drink of our region. The reception gave a sense of what it means to come from one of the worlds unspoiled and truly breath-taking places."

Premier Roger Grimes said the strong turnout at the reception is a "strong indication of the positive response to the quality food products from Atlantic Canada, and Rodrigues Winery is one of the outstanding examples of what we produce."

Founded in 1993, Rodrigues Winery exports to four Canadian provinces, and to Japan and the United States. The winery is one of only three in North America certified as kosher.

"With New York having a Jewish population of about 3.2 million, this has given us a door to knock on in this area. As well, our agent here is the largest importer of kosher wines in America, and one of the largest producers of kosher wines in the world," Mr. Stephan said.

The trade mission continues through Thursday, May 23. The Team Canada Atlantic mission to New York City is organized by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, the Departments of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Industry Canada and the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters.
