Improvements for Bird Cove to enhance access to archaeology

Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and Beaton Tulk, provincial Minister of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, today announced $370,000 in funding for the Town Council of Bird Cove to enhance community tourism infrastructure.

The project will involve construction of trails and bridges to allow access to existing archaeological sites in the community and development of a day park.

"Archaeology is an integral component of the Viking Trail Tourism Associations marketing strategy," said Minister Byrne. "The sites at Bird Cove complement the Viking Trails other archaeological resources and provide opportunities for combined marketing of the region. The further development of archaeology as a key component of tourism attractions benefits the entire Great Northern Peninsula."

"This infrastructure will strengthen the tourism product of the region and complement other initiatives to generate growth in the region's economy," said Minister Tulk. "It has been a priority of ours for that reason, and also because we recognize that it can develop business opportunities and create jobs, as we identified in our Renewal Strategy for Jobs and Growth."

Bird Cove boasts 21 designated archaeological sites. This project is part of the overall development of archaeology resources for the Viking Trail and is consistent with the priorities of the Red Ochre Regional Development Board and the marketing strategy being pursued by the Viking Trail Tourism Association. The development of the sites at Bird Cove will enhance current tourism operations in the region and contribute to the establishment of new ones.

The Canada-Newfoundland Comprehensive Economic Development is a six-year, $95.4 million initiative designed to complement existing federal and provincial programs and agreements. It is administered federally by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and provincially by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development.
