First meeting for Physician Services Liaison Committee

The first meeting of the newly formed Physician Services Liaison Committee was held this afternoon. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) agreed to the immediate establishment of this committee to provide a mechanism whereby medical issues of mutual concern can be addressed cooperatively between the Government and the Association. The Department of Health and Community Services is leading the committee on behalf of government.

"This newly-formed committee marks the beginning of a new working relationship between government and our doctors," said Gerald Smith, Minister of Health and Community Services. "It will provide a real mechanism for direct collaboration with our provinces medical community and in turn, help to improve the health care system in this province."

At todays meeting, government and the NLMA agreed to a meeting schedule as well as the structure and process for future meetings.

"We are very pleased to be taking this step in re-building our relationship with government," said Dr. John Haggie, NLMA president.
