North American project part of Financial Awareness Month activities

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador today announced details regarding its Financial Awareness Month activities, its Financial Awareness Month Web site, and a special Financial Awareness Project undertaken in cooperation with the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Johns.

The announcements were made at a news conference attended by Government Services and Lands Minister Walter Noel, Anthony Patey, Newfoundland and Labradors Securities Commissioner, Denise Voigt Crawford of NASAA, and Linda Maher, Coordinator of the Archdiocesan Marriage Preparation Program.

The highlight of the news conference was the launching of a special financial awareness course to be piloted as part of the archdioceses marriage preparation program. A new publication entitled Planning for Your Financial Future will serve as the main document for the course. This publication, as well as an instructors guide, are both posted on the Financial Awareness Month Web site (www.gov.nl.ca/gsl/cca/s/) and are available to interested parties throughout North America.

A schedule of Financial Awareness Month activities, which will inform the general public about savings and investments, mortgage brokering, real estate, insurance, pensions, and landlord-tenant issues, is also posted on the Web site.

Minister Noel said: "While the sheer number of special months and special years can sometimes become a blur, I want to highlight the importance of what we are doing here today. Financial literacy is essential to the financial stability of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and we want to ensure that citizens are in a position to make well-informed, educated decisions about where and how they invest and manage their personal incomes.

"I especially want to express my gratitude to all involved in the significant work that has been done and point out that major portions of Planning for Your Financial Future were prepared by staff of Government Services and Lands. I also want to say a special thank you to Ms. Crawford and Ms. Maher for their cooperation, interest and enthusiasm and how pleased I am that Ms. Crawford came all the way from Texas to be with us today."
