Ministers meet with Egg Producers of Newfoundland and Labrador

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford and Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ernie McLean met with the Egg Producers of Newfoundland and Labrador (EPNL) on Wednesday to discuss and look at ways to develop a viable egg industry in Labrador.

Minister Woodford said he is satisfied with the actions taken by the EPNL regarding its treatment of former Labrador egg producer, Mr. Lem Seaward. "Ive been assured that the Egg Producers of Newfoundland and Labrador followed proper procedure regarding the egg quota in Labrador. Mr. Seaward was treated fairly by the board in terms of its legislated mandate and requirements of the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency."

Minister McLean said it is time to focus on the future growth of the agrifoods sector in Labrador through the development of a Northern Agrifoods Development Strategy, which is currently underway by the departments of Forest Resources and Agrifoods and Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs.

"Public consultations are taking place in Labrador that will provide us with input from the industry and all stakeholders in developing a viable and diversified agrifoods industry for the region. A review of the potential opportunities in supply-managed commodities, including the egg industry, will be an important element in this new strategy," said Minister McLean. "This strategy is part of governments commitment to support and encourage social and economic development in Labrador. I want to make it clear that government is committed to working with all stakeholders in Labrador to ensure a viable agrifoods sector."

Minister Woodford added that the egg industry is an important part of the provinces overall agriculture sector, and government will continue to work with the EPNL and other stakeholders to help ensure a strong and prosperous egg industry in the province.
