Check stations to be set up by department

Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Rick Woodford, advised the public today that his department will be establishing check stations throughout the province as part of the departments ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with forestry and wildlife regulations. The check stations will be established at random.

"These check stations, which will be set up in strategic locations along our provincial highways and forest access roads, demonstrate governments continued commitment to ensuring that our forest and wildlife resources are managed in a prudent and efficient manner and that the laws that govern our valuable outdoor resources are adhered to," said Minister Woodford.

All vehicles transporting timber will be checked for compliance with the Forestry Act and governments recently introduced Load Slip System; as well, hunters will be checked to ensure that they are in compliance with wildlife regulations.

Minister Woodford added that setting up check stations is an example of governments pro-active approach to resource protection. "We can never be too vigilant in managing our outdoor resources and we will do whatever is necessary to ensure our forest ecosystem and wildlife resource are protected in a sustainable manner for the well-being of present and future generations."

The minister is asking for the publics cooperation when they are stopped by conservation officers at the check stations. "Our conservation officers are part of a dedicated and professional enforcement team that is committed to protecting our valuable resources for all users. I encourage the public to respect our officers, whom we highly value, as they carry out their important duties."
