Canning�s Cove man sentenced for assaulting conservation officer

A 47 year old Canning�s Cove man was recently sentenced at Grand Bank Provincial Court for assaulting and uttering death threats against a conservation officer with the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods in November 2001.

Walter Penney was sentenced to three months in jail for each of the offences, which will be served on a concurrent basis. In addition, Mr. Penney is prohibited from possessing a firearm for 10 years and has been placed on probation for two years.

Meanwhile, 57 year old Stanley Barbour of Brooklyn was also charged with assaulting the conservation officer in the same incident. Mr. Barbour plead guilty at an earlier court appearance and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.

The charges were laid against the two men following a criminal investigation by the RCMP, Clarenville District.
