Rabies case confirmed in Labrador

Dr. Hugh Whitney, provincial veterinarian with the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, today confirmed a case of rabies in Labrador.

Dr. Whitney said the rabies case involves a fox that was first reported to conservation officers in Cartwright on May 30 and tested positive on June 6.

"The fox was reported to conservation officers after it was seen chasing a vehicle and biting its tires. The fox also looked sick and, as a result, a conservation officer shot the animal and testing followed," said Dr. Whitney.

Dr. Whitney said there has been no reported human or domestic animal contact, but reminded the public to continue to be wary of this disease and report suspicious cases to local authorities.
