2002 Agrifoods and Garden Show gets underway

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford is encouraging the public to visit the 2002 Agrifoods and Garden Show taking place this weekend (May 24-26) at the Canada Games Centre in Corner Brook. The show is being sponsored by the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods in conjunction with the provinces food and horticultural industry.

"The Agrifoods and Garden Show has demonstrated continued growth in popularity since its inception three years ago. During this period, over 25,000 visitors have attended this event making it one of the largest and most popular agricultural exhibitions of its kind in the province. This years show promises to be even bigger and better," said Minister Woodford. "Agriculture fairs bring attention to the importance of our agriculture industry to this province both economically and socially. I encourage everyone to participate in the Agrifoods and Garden Show and check out the wide variety of displays and demonstrations."

Organizers of the Agrifoods and Garden Show have targeted school children as key participants in the 2002 exhibition. Special emphasis will be placed on education and important issues such as preservation of the environment.

"More than 5,000 children from Kindergarten to Grade Six have been provided with passes to this years show, compliments of the School Milk Foundation and the chicken, egg, and dairy producers in the province," said Minister Woodford. "Government and industry realize that increasing childrens awareness about the importance of agriculture and agrifoods will provide long lasting benefits with respect to increasing the profile of the industry in our province."

The 2002 Agrifoods and Garden Show boasts a number of interesting and entertaining attractions for people of all ages. Included in this years show will be a gardeners marketplace, garden seminars, food and garden demonstrations, a garden restaurant, an alpine plant display, a theme farm and even a three little pigs exhibit.

Minister Woodford also wishes to remind the public that numerous other agricultural fairs will be held around the province this spring, summer and fall. "All of these events celebrate the importance of the local agriculture and agrifood industry to our rural economy. I encourage everyone to take in an agricultural fair or exhibition in their area this year and join in the celebration of our valuable agricultural industry. "
