2002 forest fire season

Rick Woodford, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, today announced the dates for the 2002 forest fire season.

The forest fire season for the island portion of the province will officially get underway at midnight May 3 and will remain in effect until midnight September 22. In Labrador, the forest fire season will start midnight May 17 and end midnight September 22.

Mr. Woodford said government remains committed to a sound forest fire protection and suppression program, which is an integral component of overall sustainable forest management strategy.

He said his departments forest fire suppression staff are ready to serve the public in protecting our forest resources. "Approximately 100 fire suppression staff, supported by conservation officers, will again perform their important duties when and where needed during this years forest fire season. Our team consists of extremely professional individuals who are to be commended for their hard work to ensure the protection of valuable forest resources and personal property. "

The department will operate a fleet of six water bombers and four light helicopters during the 2002 forest fire season, which are strategically stationed on the island and in Labrador. If extra resources are required that are not available locally, the department will avail of the Mutual Aid Resources Sharing Agreement (MARS) with other provinces. As well, all fire equipment has undergone its required servicing.

Mr. Woodford said: "Although my department is ready for the 2002 forest fire season, I encourage everyone to be extra careful when in or near the woods this summer and to make sure that fires are properly extinguished. We have to work together to ensure a healthy forest for all of its users."

Minister Woodford also reminded the general public that, in accordance with forest fire regulations, burning permits are required for lighting outdoor fires for the purpose of clearing land or burning brush within 300 metres of forest land. Permits are available at forestry offices around the province. The lighting of fires for personal use (cooking, camping) does not require a permit, but forest fire regulations must be followed

The 2002 Forest Fire Regulations also contain an amendment related to outdoor wood burning units. An outdoor burning unit must be made entirely of non-combustible material, completely contain the fire, screened to prevent sparks from escaping, placed on a mineral soil and be located a minimum of 3.5 metres from flammable material.

The minister said the amendment was made following concern by some communities about the potential danger of forest fires from wood burning units.
