Minister to attend agriculture ministers� meeting

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford will be attending the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Agriculture Ministers� Meeting in Toronto on Thursday, January 24.

Minister Woodford said he is looking forward to meeting with his counterparts to discuss important agriculture issues, especially ongoing efforts to achieve a new national agriculture policy framework that will create a new vision for the agrifoods industry, ensuring its success and sustainability.

"I look forward to discussing certain elements of the agriculture framework, including environment, science and risk management with my federal and provincial counterparts. I will also stress the importance of a new national agreement to the future growth of the Newfoundland and Labrador agriculture industry."

The minister said he is hopeful that a new national agriculture framework will be in place for the 2003 fiscal year, following the expiration of the current Safety Nets Agreement.

Meanwhile, Minister Woodford will also be participating in a Canadian Federation of Agriculture Roundtable in Toronto on Wednesday, January 23.
