Minister releases details of program and calls on Trevor Taylor
to withdraw false statements made against the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture

Accusations made against the Department and Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture are completely false, and the Progressive Conservative Fisheries critic should withdraw his statements. Trevor Taylor, who is the Fisheries critic in the House of Assembly, yesterday accused Gerry Reid, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, of taking money from the Special Assistance Grants Program and diverting the funds to pay for advertising for the Premier.

"There is absolutely no truth to Mr. Taylors allegations, and it is disgraceful that he has called into question my integrity and the integrity of every official within the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture," said Minister Reid. "I am releasing details of the Special Assistance Grants Program, which clearly outlines expenditures for the year to date and puts to rest any false claim that money from this fund was used for advertising."

The Special Assistance Grants Program has a budget of $350,000 for the 2002-2003 fiscal year. The program is one of the most useful and beneficial of its kind for those rural communities with existing fishery infrastructure in need of repair, as funding from this program allows for the repair and maintenance of infrastructure, which is vital to the people in the fishing industry in those communities.

"Mr. Taylor asserts that monies from this fund suddenly dried up in recent weeks, which is another inaccuracy," added the minister. "In fact, we still have a small amount of money left in the fund for any remaining projects which may come up before the end of the year. As well, Mr. Taylor should take a closer look at what is happening in his own region. In the past month I have approved several grants under this program for the Northern Peninsula, consisting of two districts represented by Progressive Conservative MHAs: Mr. Taylor and Mr. Wally Young. This program is one of the most rigorously administered in the department, and we can account for every cent that has been disbursed to date, which is why I have released details to the public."
