Minister has productive meeting with federal counterpart

Gerry Reid, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, met today with Robert Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. It was the first meeting between the two ministers, since Thibault was appointed to the Fisheries and Oceans portfolio in February 2002.

"I had a very productive meeting with Minister Thibault, and I brought forward several items of importance to the Newfoundland and Labrador fishery," said Reid. "Among some of our discussion items were the outcome of the recent NAFO meetings, the impact of foreign overfishing on our resources, shrimp and groundfish tariffs, the vessel replacement policy and vessel insurance. Minister Thibault demonstrated a sincere interest in and appreciation for the issues affecting our province."

The minister also brought the following items to the agenda: 3O redfish; seals; Fishery Products International; and crab permits.

"Although this meeting was primarily to get acquainted with the minister, we were able to cover a wide variety of issues," added Reid. "I am confident that we will have a positive working relationship, as we move forward on federal and provincial issues. I was impressed with Minister Thibaults knowledge of the issues, and I am confident that as a fellow Atlantic Canadian, he will serve as a positive force in the fishery."
