Government House Leader discusses fall House session

Government House Leader Tom Lush said he is pleased with governments performance during the fourth session of the 44th General Assembly of the legislature, which opened on March 19, 2002, and officially adjourned yesterday.

"Government passed a number of important pieces of legislation this past session of the House of Assembly, which reflect the financial, social and economic agenda of government," said Minister Lush. "The passing of bills such as the Student Financial Assistance Act; the Adoption Act; the new Income and Employment Support Act; the Mining and Mineral Rights Tax Act; and the Automobile Insurance Act demonstrate this government will continue to enact legislation, programs and policies that support the needs of people working and living in the province. A substantive legislative agenda was introduced in this session and we have made great progress in getting the required agenda through the legislative process."

The minister added that government was particularly pleased to see a number of bills passed into legislation. In particular, the Adoption Act will improve the adoption process and enable those searching for birth children/families to have easier access to information. As well, the new Income and Employment Act will more accurately reflect the needs of those on income support in the province.

In addition, the minister stated he was pleased the Mining and Mineral Rights Tax Act passed as it supports governments economic agenda, and will help ensure the province and its people receive a full and appropriate share of the economic benefits from our natural resource developments.

"As a government, our purpose is to put in place effective policy that improves social and economic conditions for the people of our province," said Minister Lush. "The province is poised to move forward with great confidence and hope. We look forward to continuing to advance our fiscal, social and economic agenda in a positive and productive manner in the next year."
