Newfoundland and Labrador representatives emerge from meeting united

An unprecedented meeting was convened in Ottawa last night by Gerry Byrne, Newfoundland and Labradors representative in the federal cabinet, involving federal MPs, senators, Premier Roger Grimes, Danny Williams, Leader of the Official Opposition, Jack Harris, leader of the NDP and representatives of the provincial legislature. The meeting was called as a result of a unanimous resolution which was passed in the provincial House of Assembly, concerning the future of the Newfoundland and Labrador cod fishery.

The group did not conclude that a closure of the cod fishery is necessary. Rather, the consensus formed was that an analysis and a comprehensive rebuilding plan is required that would deal with key issues that are negatively impacting the fish stocks. This plan would outline positive measures to address issues including, seal overpopulation and predation, custodial management and gear types.

The group will continue the process of maintaining this unprecedented common front with federal parliamentarians and the provincial legislators, in dealing with the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

What was agreed upon by participants, was the establishment of an all-party task group to consider specific issues, and to reconvene and report back prior to Christmas.

The group entered the meeting in full agreement that partisan politics would have no place in the discussion. At the meetings end, the group emerged united on the notion of developing an action plan which represents the best interests of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
