Voluntary Sector joins Northeast Avalon Steering Committee

The Northeast Avalon Region of the Strategic Social Plan (SSP) has four new steering committee members from the voluntary sector.

"Getting community agencies more directly involved in the work of the SSP is one of the plans objectives," said Joan Dawe, chair of the Northeast Avalon Region Steering Committee. "Certainly this has been a priority for us. With over 1,000 groups from the voluntary sector in Northeast Avalon, our new members will help us ensure broader representation and better networking in the region."

Over the summer the committee issued a call for Expressions of Interest to community groups and received 20 submissions. The following four individuals were selected based on their experience in the volunteer community, their abilities to provide broad representation, and their capacities to network with other community groups in the region:

Peggy Matchim: three -year term
Peggy is the coordinator of the Community Services Council (CSC) Volunteer Centre. She has a great deal of experience working and volunteering in the sector, most notably with Planned Parenthood Newfoundland and Labrador. CSC offers extensive networking opportunities for the volunteer sector, including its online resources, www.envision.ca.

Wanda Burt: three-year term
Wanda is the Salvation Armys divisional community and family services director for the Newfoundland East Division. Through her organization she is involved in numerous community based initiatives, and has also partnered with the Central Region Steering Committee of the SSP prior to moving to St. Johns.

Catherine Rowsell: two-year term
Catherine has extensive experience in the voluntary community-based sector. She has held senior management positions with the Canadian Red Cross and Women Interested in Successful Employment (WISE), and is also involved with the community Coalition for Better Solutions (CABS).

Susan Green: two-year term
Susan is executive director with the Kids Eat Smart Foundation. She is a member of several coalitions relating to nutrition, food security and community development and has been involved in the voluntary community-based sector for the past 14 years.

"I commend the Northeast Avalon Region Steering Committee for its approach to involving community groups," said Gerald Smith, Minister of Health and Community Services and lead minister for the Strategic Social Plan. "While the issues of social and economic development are complex in this province, we are collaborating to make significant changes that will benefit us all in the long term."

The steering committee also plans to develop a network to consult with other groups and individuals who submitted nominations but were not chosen to sit on the committee.
