Successful first Royal Commission hearing held in Harbour Breton

The Royal Commission on Renewing and Strengthening our Place in Canada held its first public meeting in the Lions Club at Harbour Breton last night.

"We want to ensure that the people of our province have every opportunity to help shape a blueprint for a prosperous and self-reliant Newfoundland and Labrador, and we certainly received a great deal of help in Harbour Breton, with a wide diversity of views," said Commission Chair Vic Young.

"There were about 100 people in the Lions Club last night and they came to share their ideas. Their main issues were: custodial management outside 200 miles; the overall state of the fishery; and the provinces lack of political clout in Ottawa. Clearly, the importance of restoring the fishery is the most critical issue facing coastal Newfoundland and Labrador, based on the dialogue in Harbour Breton."

The commissioners met informally with people as they entered the Lions Club. Earlier in the day, they met with schoolchildren at schools in Harbour Breton and English Harbour West and they also visited the FPI fish plant.

The public hearings are part of a three-part process that also includes roundtables and research. The three remaining meetings during the first week will be held at the Mount Peyton Hotel, Grand Falls-Windsor on October 1, the Albatross Hotel, Gander on October 2, and the Waterfront Premises (theatre), Barbour Living Heritage Village, Newtown, New Wes Valley on October 3.

The Royal Commission on Renewing and Strengthening Our Place in Canada is chaired by Vic Young, with Sister Elizabeth Davis and Judge James Igloliorte as commissioners. The Royal Commission will file its final report by June 30, 2003.
