The following is being distributed at the request to the Council of Atlantic Premiers:

Appointment of Secretary to the Council of Atlantic Premiers

The Council of Atlantic Premiers is pleased to announce the appointment of Edgar G. Cramm to the position of Secretary to Council, effective August 1, 2002.

Mr. Cramm will move to the Council of Atlantic Premiers from his current portfolio as deputy minister of Community Services, Province of Nova Scotia. He will be replacing Leo J. Walsh, whose secondment from Prince Edward Island, ends on July 31, 2002.

A native of Newfoundland and Labrador, Mr. Cramm has a bachelor of commerce and a masters of public administration from Dalhousie University. A longtime Nova Scotia public servant, Mr. Cramm has also served as deputy minister of municipal affairs, health, economic development, and tourism.

The Council of Atlantic Premiers was established through a memorandum of understanding signed by the four Atlantic Premiers in May 2000. The Council of Atlantic Premiers, building on the long-established Council of Maritime Premiers, is the first agency of its kind in Canada in which four provinces systematically seek to identify and exploit opportunities through joint action. The council oversees several regional agencies and currently has more than 30 regional initiatives under way in an effort to improve public services for Atlantic Canadians and reduce barriers to business within the region.
