Premier appoints Parliamentary Secretary for Labrador Transportation Initiatives

Premier Roger Grimes today appointed Cartwright LAnse au Clair MHA Yvonne Jones as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Works, Services and Transportation - Labrador Transportation Initiatives.

Labrador was highlighted in the recent Speech from the Throne and government committed more than $100 million to Phase III of the Trans-Labrador Highway in last months Budget. A number of economic and social investments were made in Labrador through the provincial budget, including improvements to marine infrastructure, upgrading and maintenance of roads, funding for Labrador 2002 Celebrations and funding for the Transition House Program.

"The importance of Labrador to the province cannot be underestimated in any way," said Premier Grimes. "Appointing Ms. Jones, a Labrador MHA, as parliamentary secretary on a file of such importance to the people of Labrador demonstrates an overall commitment to ensure that Labradorians are represented fully and responsibly in governments long-term plans for the region. These plans place a priority on developing high-quality transportation in Labrador and, particularly, on ensuring the timely completion of Phase III of the Trans-Labrador Highway."

Ms. Jones previously served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Community Services. Her appointment is effective immediately.
