Government has again earmarked funding for Violence Prevention Initiative

As part of its continuing efforts to address the problem of violence against women, children, the elderly and others who are victims because of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class or ability, government will provide $500,000 during the 2002-2003 fiscal year to the Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI).

This initiative grew out of the Provincial Strategy Against Violence (PSAV) announced by government in 1995. The two major goals of the VPI are to reduce violence and improve the delivery of services to victims.

The VPI is an interdepartmental initiative, coordinated by the Womens Policy Office, involving the departments of Justice, Education, Human Resources and Employment, Health and Community Services, and Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, as well as the Strategic Social Plan Unit and the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. It also brings together key expertise and resources from organizations such as: Provincial Association Against Family Violence; Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women; Seniors Resource Centre; and the Citizens Crime Prevention Association of Newfoundland and Labrador

The VPI is based on a vision that the people of our province will live in safe, caring communities where there is an inherent respect for each other and violence of any sort is unacceptable.

Sandra Kelly, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, said: "The strength of this initiative lies in community partnerships. Through regional coordinating committees, individuals are coming together at the community level to pool resources to do anti-violence work and to improve service coordination for victims of violence."
