Government House leader discusses past House session

Government House Leader Tom Lush said he is pleased with governments performance during the Third Session of the 44th General Assembly of the legislature, which opened on November 19, 2001, and officially prorogued yesterday. A total of 60 pieces of legislation were enacted during this session of the House of Assembly.

"Government passed a number of important pieces of legislation this past session of the House of Assembly, including enabling legislation which resulted in the appointment of a Citizens Representative; the Newfoundland and Labrador Act; the Child and Youth Advocate Act, which will ensure the interests of children and youth are advanced; and amendments to the Labour Standards Act, which represent the most comprehensive reform of labour standards legislation in almost 30 years" said Minister Lush.

"We were especially pleased to pass two vital pieces of legislation this week. The Fishery Products International Limited Act (Bill 65) was amended to give effect to the recommendations of the All-Party Review Committee resulting from the recent public consultations on the act, and An Act To Provide The Public With Access To Information And Protection Of Privacy (Bill 49) is part of this governments commitment to openness and accountability."

Minister Lush added he is looking forward to the upcoming Speech from the Throne and Budget Speech which will demonstrate governments commitment to making fiscally responsible decisions and will follow through on policy announced through legislation.

On Tuesday, March 19, at 2:00 p.m. His Honour Lieutenant-Governor Dr. A.M. House will open the Fourth Session of the 44th General Assembly of the legislature with the reading of the Speech from the Throne.
