Newfoundlanders and Labradorians honoured
for leadership achievements in womens health

Sandra Kelly, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, attended an evening celebration yesterday, where five Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and one organization, were recognized for their leadership in promoting womens health. The celebration was co-hosted by the Atlantic Centre of Excellence for Womens Health and the Newfoundland and Labrador Womens Health Network

The individuals and their associates honoured were: Alice Blundon, creator of the Fun and Fitness Program for women ages 60 to 80, Conception Bay North; Jon Church, Associate Professor, Terry Fox Cancer Laboratories, Memorial University of Newfoundland for his work with the Breast Cancer survivors network; Lan Gien, President, National Organization of Immigrant and Visible Minority Women of Canada for her work on senior and immigrant womens health issues; Barbara Neis, Professor of Sociology, Memorial University of Newfoundland for her work on womens health in rural communities and womens occupational health; and Joanne Rose and her team at the Cervical Screening Initiative, Western Newfoundland for developing and implementing their screening and education program. The organization honoured for its leadership in womens health was Planned Parenthood of Newfoundland and Labrador for their 30 years of sexual health services in the province.

Minister Kelly said: "The Atlantic Centre for Womens Health, which was founded in 1996, is one of five such centres across Canada whose purpose is to support capacity building in womens health research, influence policy and promote action on the social factors that affect the health and well-being of women and their families.

"Last evenings celebration of the leadership contribution of individuals and organizations working in our communities is significant because it honours not only the day-to-day work that makes a difference in the lives of women but work that potentially affects the lives of all women throughout Canada. They have made a lasting contribution to the well-being of our provinces citizens. They are to be commended for their dedication and service."

Last evenings celebration is the first of four recognition ceremonies to be held throughout Atlantic Canada. Award recipients individuals and organizations working in communities, universities, clinical settings and the public and private sectors are nominated by their peers in their respective provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The other three celebrations will be held in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on February 20; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on February 21; and Halifax, Nova Scotia, on February 28.
