Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Kevin Aylward has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Harbour Grace Marine Vessel Repair Facility
Proponent: Dawe�s Welding and Sons Limited

The proponent proposes to construct a new building which will house a fiberglassing, painting and sandblasting operation for marine vessels. This facility will be located at the site of Dawe�s Welding and Sons Ltd. current operation at the Marine Service Centre, Beach Hill Road, Harbour Grace. The existing facilities are situated on two hectares of waterfront property. The proposed building will be approximately 160 feet long, 118 feet wide and 55 feet high, with a concrete foundation and steel frame. The building is proposed to be airtight and will include a ventilation system with filtration equipment to remove fibreglass particles and other odorous substances. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2003. At present, fibreglass work on larger vessels is undertaken in two temporary structures located adjacent to the Marine Service Centre. The undertaking was registered on December 4, 2002; public comments are due by January 8, 2003; and the minister�s decision is due by January 18, 2003. The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
