Newfoundland Burn it Smart! Residential wood combustion workshop series

Residents of northern, western and central Newfoundland have a chance to learn how to burn wood more cleanly, safely and efficiently, plus get the most out of their wood burning appliances. A wood combustion workshop series is being organized by the Atlantic Chapter of the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association of Canada (HPBAC) with support from the Newfoundland and Labrador departments of Environment and Health and Community Services, the Office of the Fire Commissioner, the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association, the Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and the Wood Energy Technical Transfer (WETT) non-profit organization.

During this educational campaign, a series of free public workshops will be offered in locations across northern, western, and central Newfoundland. Afternoon workshops will be directed toward people who have a professional interest in residential wood burning (fire prevention, insurance, contractors, building inspectors, retailers) while evening workshops will be geared toward consumers.

The following topics will be covered in the workshops:

  • Advances in wood burning appliances that result in safer and more efficient wood burning;
  • The proper installation and maintenance of wood burning appliances;
  • The professional training and certification programs available to professionals with an interest in residential wood combustion;
  • Cutting, seasoning and burning tips for getting the most heat from wood burning;
  • The improvement in air quality resulting from the use of advanced technology appliances.
