Continued funding for environmental remediation work

The Department of Environment received a $600,000 allocation in the 2002-2003 Budget to continue its environmental remediation work at abandoned sites.

"There has been considerable progress made over the last number of years to clean up abandoned military sites in the province and government will continue to work to improve and enhance our environment," said Minister Ralph Wiseman.

Last year the department focused efforts at three abandoned sites. At both Northwest Point in Labrador and Jerrys Nose/West Bay on the Port au Port Peninsula the work involved site assessment and the removal of debris and buildings. In St. Anthony work began on assessing the remediation required at the site. In 2002-2003, the department will begin the next phase of work at each of these sites.
