Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Ralph Wiseman has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act.

NEW UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Crown Five-Year Forest Management Plan District 1 (Avalon) 2002-2007
Proponent: Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods

The proponent has submitted a five-year operating plan for Crown Land in Forest Management District 1, the Avalon Peninsula. The plan covers the operating period from April 2002 to March 2007. The plan describes past forestry activities, the allocation of wood supply and harvesting, silviculture activities, road construction and environmental protection. The plan describes a potential harvest of 73,000 cubic metres of timber each year by domestic and commercial harvesting. Construction of 21 kilometres of new forest access road and decommissioning of 14 kilometres of access road are proposed. Also proposed are 2,200 hectares of silviculture treatment consisting mainly of planting and various types of thinning of natural forest regrowth.

More detailed mapping (ie. larger scale) of individual domestic harvesting, commercial harvesting, silviculture, and access road construction areas are available for viewing at the District Forestry Office or Environmental Assessment Division library. The undertaking was registered on February 15; public comments are due on March 22, and the minister's decision is due on April 1.
