MMSB clarifies information on used tire recycling contract

The Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) today released statements to clarify some of the misinformation made in the media regarding the used tire recycling contract.

"There are a number of companies and individuals in the province currently re-using and recycling used tires, and these companies will still have access to this product," said Gordon Seabright, MMSB chair. "MMSB does not own used tires, it has only established a contract with a local company to collect and process them, and MMSB has not put any limits on the number of used tires that will be available to existing users."

MMSB has a contract with Municipal Recyclers Limited to establish collection sites for used tires throughout the province, to transport used tires from those collection sites to its processing facility in Argentia, and to process the used tires into crumb rubber. The company will also be responsible for marketing and selling its processed product.

Mr. Seabright explained that, as stated in the request for proposal document, the contracted company must demonstrate a willingness and ability to provide access to established used tire processors and manufacturers to meet their existing business needs. In addition, the company is encouraged to build partnerships within the industry and with other businesses.

"MMSB is now in the process of determining the exact number of companies and their business needs to ensure they will have continued access to used tires," said Mr. Seabright.
