MMSB encourages households to become a Green Home

Households across the province now have access to more recycling information thanks to the Multi-Material Stewardship Boards (MMSB) Green Home program, which was launched this week at Green Depots across the province. The purpose of this program, which is aimed at all households, is to inform individuals about what beverage containers are recyclable, how to prepare their containers, as well as to encourage households to promote their home as a Green Home.

"The Green Home program is a way of providing accurate and up-to-date recycling information and it encourages people to promote that their household recycles and is doing their part to protect our environment," said Karen ONeill, MMSB communications officer.

ONeill said people can set up a system in their home so that all members of the household know what is recyclable and how to prepare their beverage containers for recycling at the local Green Depot. Residents across the province can visit their local Green Depot and pick up a Green Home kit which includes instructions on how to set up a recycling program in their home, a magnet, and a decal for the front of their house.

People that participate in the Green Home program can enter to win a reusable recycling bag for their home. Entry ballots are attached to the Green Home kit and are available at every Green Depot in the province. ONeill emphasized that the Green Home program is not a contest. "We want to provide useful recycling information and a small reward for participating homes. The Green Home program is a way of bringing recycling to peoples minds every day, and thereby encouraging recycling throughout the year."

The provinces beverage container recycling program is administered by MMSB, a Crown agency established by the Department of Environment to develop, implement and manage a variety of waste diversion programs in Newfoundland and Labrador. MMSB is currently responsible for the beverage container recycling program and the administration of the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund.
