Education minister encourages parents to take their children to work

Education Minister Judy Foote encourages all parents or caregivers to participate in the national Take Our Kids to Work Day on Wednesday, November 6. Take Our Kids to Work Day invites Grade 9 students to spend a day at work with a parent, relative, caregiver or friend. This year, the program theme is Skilled Trades and Emerging Occupations, where careers in construction, manufacturing and communications sectors are highlighted.

"By Grade 9, our students are beginning to consider possible career choices," said Minister Foote. "By accompanying an adult to the workplace, students can have a better appreciation of different careers and can make more informed decisions about their future."

While Take Our Kids to Work Day supports the intermediate career education curriculum, it also allows students to understand that education goes beyond the classroom. "The preparation they do in intermediate and high school can impact their future career goals," said Minister Foote. "I encourage all Grade 9 students throughout the province to take advantage of the opportunity to experience a day in a workplace environment."

Take Our Kids to Work Day began in 1994 and by 1998 it was a national program with participation and support from all provinces and territories. That year, an estimated 400,000 students went to work in over 70,000 workplaces. Take Our Kids to Work Day is organized by The Learning Partnership, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing together business, education, labour, policy makers and the community to develop partnerships that strengthen public education in Canada.

"We are experiencing significant economic development in Newfoundland and Labrador. We are diversifying our economy and we will need more skilled workers in such sectors as manufacturing, technology and energy," said Minister Foote. "The more information our students have about the workplace and the economy, the better prepared they will be to take advantage of these increasing opportunities."
